Micro Touch is the leader in HID Lighting for off-road racing. Micro Touch founder, Gary Fries, has been an off-road enthusiast since 1973. Gary got his first motorcycle at the age of ten. His first car was a Myers Manx style buggy that he built from a pan buggy in 1971. After abusing the stock suspension well past the destruction threshold, Gary "triple shocked" the rear end. This sparked the beginning of an addiction for off-road performance.
Gary then purchased his first buggy from Brian Skipper (now owner of Sway-A-Way Products) in 1973 and started racing it in the local AMSA races held at Saddleback Park and Santa Maria, CA. The competition at these races was pretty tough. Fellow racers you might recognize included Parnelli Jones, Rick, Roger and Bill Mears, Bobby Ferro and more. AMSA racing was great! The next step was a new race at Riverside Raceway promoted by SCORE. Gary entered every race SCORE held at Riverside and raced everything from Class 1 and Class 2 to Class 8. At this time Gary also got involved in SCORE Off-Road Racing (Baja 1000, Baja 500, San Felipe 250, The Mint 400, Firecracker 250 and more.)

This is when the importance of lighting really came into play. The cars and trucks Gary raced always had more light than any of the competition. While racing Baja in Class 8 his PCA/GMC Sponsored Class 8 Truck was heavily customized. One innovation was running two alternators in series producing 24 volts. The 24 volt system allowed the use of air craft landing lights from a 747 airplane! During this time Gary was working as a technician at Beverly Hill Porsche. Another innovation was outfitting the driving lights with Porsche 930 Turbo headlight squirters. Squirters? Yes, why not clean the headlights from the cockpit of the truck. We pioneered many of the current innovations in the off-raod products industry.
During the Early 80’s, Gary worked as racecar mechanic for the PPI Team (Precision Preparation Inc.) with such drivers as Ivan "Iron Man" Stewart, Robby Gordon, Steve and Rod Millen and Frank Arcerio. |
